REV. KRISTY DANIELS TO PREACH
Pastor Kristy Daniels from the Seattle Compass Center will join us in worship and preach Sunday, September 20th. If you want to support the ministry to the homeless on the streets of Seattle, you can help by donating items, such as instant hand/foot warmer packs (like used for skiing), socks, underwear, towels, and hygiene items such as travel size soaps, shampoo, conditioners, lotion, toothpaste & brushes.

RUMMAGE SALE
Our rummage sale this year will be September 26th.  Save your stuff!  Again, we will not take clothing.  If you have small things and do not have a place to store them, you may bring them to the church and put them in the choir room.  Please do not bring furniture or large items as we do not have much room to store them until the sale.  The proceeds from this sale (supplemented by Thrivent Financial for Lutherans) will go in support of the mission work of the Stubbs Family in Tanzania and our sister congregation in Elista, Russia.

WORK IN THE FOOD BANK GARDEN
is going well, but we are in need of a coordinator. We have had several work Saturdays and many thanks to all who have participated. The fun part of growing and sharing is beginning. Come join us and give consideration to becoming the new coordinator.

WOMEN’S BIBLE STUDY GROUP
The Women’s Bible Study Group will meet 2 pm September 30th at Cheryl Prescott’s home for an introduction to the book of Acts. Come and learn about life under Roman rule, the structure of Acts, authorship, date, purpose, and how thirty years changed history through the working of the Holy Spirit. It will be informative. Please read the book of Acts and the introduction in The Acts of the Apostles, by William Kurz.

IN MEMORY
Ardythe Van Reeth, long time member and active supporter of many programs in our congregation, went to be with her Savior on July 17, 2009. Her memorial service was held at the church on August 8th. She will be missed by all of us.

WORSHIP AT THE COMMUNITY CARE CENTER
On Sunday, September 27th we will provide a worship service at the VICCC at 9:15am. The care center will offer training in interaction with persons in the center. Those interested in volunteering to help with the service should contact Pastor Bjoern.

CONGRATULATIONS
Chelsea Janssen (our nursery attendant of many years) married Matthew Cunningham on August 15th at Vashon Lutheran Church. Rev. Meinhardt officiated. Congratulations and God’s blessings on your union.

60TH WEDDING ANNIVERSARIES
Were celebrated in July for Dwayne and June Langland and for Bill and Ruth Moorhouse in August. In September Le Roy and Dorothy Topp will celebrate their 60th.  Congratulations to all three couples and prayers for God’s continued blessings.

INTERCESSORY PRAYER GROUP
An intercessory prayer group meets every Thursday morning at 9:00am in the church. Please call Gail Larson at 567-4779 for prayer requests and if you are able join the group to pray for those in need.

SUNDAY SCHOOL WILL RESUME THIS MONTH.

BIBLE STUDIES IN OCTOBER
Starting in October we will have two Bible studies. On Sunday mornings at 9:15am we will have a study on Science and Faith. The book we will be using is: God’s Undertaker: Has Science Buried God? by John C. Lennox. Then on Wednesdays at 6:30pm we will examine the core beliefs of the church, using the book: Bringing Theology to Life: Key Doctrines for Christian Faith and Mission by Darren Marks. Alister McGrath has written this about the book: “A very useful guide to some classic Christian doctrines and recent theological reflection about them”. More information on both classes will be coming soon.

AN ELECTRONIC MOUSE IN 2010
In January of next year The Mouse will go electronic. There will be three ways in which you can receive it.

  1. You can go the our website at www.vashonlutheranchurch.org
  2. You can have it e-mailed to you
  3. You can sign-up to continue to have a printed copy mailed to your home address. You need to contact the church office to have the Church Mouse mailed to you.

NEW HYMNS
Martin Luther encouraged congregational singing and wrote many hymns that we use today. There is always a need for new hymns that reflect current concerns within the church. The ELCA has set a goal that by the 500th anniversary of our church, to create 50 new hymns, in all styles and types. Each congregation is encouraged to seek out people who
want to write new hymns and music. Then use the new hymns in congregational worship and select the best and forward them to the local synod. The synod will select the best to use in our celebration in 2017. This is a worthwhile and doable project. Let’s all contribute to a new voice in worship.

LOST CLOTHING
from Vacation Bible School is at the Episcopal Church.

FREE DENTAL CARE AVAILABLE
Care is available to Vashon residents who meet poverty level criteria (poverty guidelines are posted on bulletin board by pastor’s office). Our community dentists, hygienists, assistants, and Medical Teams International Mobile Van have come together to provide free cleaning and restorative services to eligible residents on Sept. 25th. Walk-ins cannot be seen. Call for screening in order to schedule an appointment at 206 463-9032.

CHURCH CHOIR
Thank you to all who participated in the choir during the summer. We will take an intermission during the month of September and hope to resume some time in October. The choir was a blessing to all and we look forward to continuing with it.

A SERVICE OF PRAYER AND HEALING...
“Prayer”...to ask for...to request...to seek...to inquire
Ask and to you it shall be given, seek and you shall find, knock and doors will open. Matt7.7
“Heal”...to make sound or whole...to mend...to restore...
Is anyone among you sick? Then call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over you, anointing you with oil in the name of the Lord. And the prayer of faith will save the sick, and the Lord will raise you up. And if you have committed sins, you will be forgiven. Confess your trespasses to one another, and pray for one another, that you may be healed. James 5.14-16a

We will have the opportunity to quietly gather for prayer and healing in the Lutheran church sanctuary from 6 - 6.30 p.m. the first Sunday of each month. Our next service will be June 7 at 6pm.

Regardless of who you are and what you carry, you are welcome in this place. Come to pray aloud or silently. Come forward to be prayed for through naming your concerns or retaining your silence or...simply come to sit for a while and unwind with your own thoughts. No pressure, no intrusion...A simple service without music...without liturgy...in a candle-lit sanctuary where we gather to hear a few readings, pray and be prayed for, and sit and just be.

The Rev. Jeff Larson, Ph.D. is a Lutheran minister and clinical psychologist called by Vashon Lutheran Church to provide counseling services to the community. As a member of the body of believers he feels that spiritual health in its many shapes and forms is key to attaining psychological and physical health.
