ADVENT: OF THE BIRTH OF OUR SAVIOR The first three psalms (80, 85, 126), which are read on the Sundays in Advent, all contain the verb "to restore." Although the verb is not used in the reading for Advent 4 (Psalm 89), the author feels that God's love has been restored. The topic for this Advent series is then "Restore Us, O God." Each Sunday's topic (hope, peace, joy, and love) serves as a link to the four candles of the Advent wreath. To support the notion that Advent is a time of preparation and anticipation, we will again gradually set up the Christmas tree in the course of these four weeks leading to the celebration Jesus Christ. This is due to the cost of receiving, sterilizing, storing and distributing these items. They rather are focusing on donations that will make a positive impact on the lives of their clients. Therefore, they continue to accept: sheets (gently used ok and laundered); towels (gently used ok and laundered); Quilts; new socks; new men’s sweatpants and sweatshirts & hygiene supplies. All donors are asked to contact the agency before dropping off any items by calling: 206 357 3108. A full description of their policies is posted on the bulletin board in the fellowship hall. SYNOD APPEAL FOR HOUSING HOMELESS WOMEN AND CHILDREN Have you seen the news coverage of moms and their children sleeping in tents at "Nickelsville" in Seattle? Two weeks ago the children spoke of being cold. The temperatures have become much colder since then. As the state has cut Temporary Assistance to Needy Families, the number of apartment evictions has grown right at the coldest time of the year. This situation is not acceptable to the people of God. In January of 2012 the city of Seattle will release $500,000 to help provide housing for families. But there are 38 cold nights from Thanksgiving Day through the end of 2011. For $10,000 Mary's Place in downtown Seattle can provide overnight shelter for those 38 days to many of the families living in tents. The cost to provide housing is about $300 per day. I'm looking for 37 partners to each pledge $300 to provide this family housing for the period from Thanksgiving through December 31, 2011. My wife and I will provide the 38th $300 through our congregation, The Church of Steadfast Love. If you as an individual, or your family, or your congregation will pledge to provide $300, please email me at as soon as possible and include the name of the person responsible for following through on the payment. By knowing of your pledge, Mary's Place can start to plan. Please mail your check payable to the NW Washington Synod to 5519 Phinney Ave N, Seattle, WA 98103. Please know that families from all of the counties in our synod find their way to Mary's Place (which will be located at Gethsemane Lutheran Church in downtown Seattle once their new building is completed. Although Mary's Place normally only operates a day shelter, the need for overnight shelter has become so great that Mary's Place is looking for more churches in the Seattle area where overnight shelter for women and children can be provided. Churches are asked to be the shelter location one week each quarter of the year (so 4 times per year). Please call Marty Hartman, the director of Mary's Place, if your church would like to learn more. The number is 206-621-8474. With the overnight shelters come many more needs for volunteers. You and others from your church are invited to volunteer at shelter sites. Some of the $10,000 will help provide beds and blankets for the new shelters. Thank you Rev. Jerry Buss Director for Evangelical Mission CONSIDERATION OF OTHERS Please refrain from wearing fragrances to worship services or church events. Many persons suffer from allergies. A SERVICE of PRAYER and HEALING We will have the opportunity to quietly gather for prayer and healing in the Lutheran church sanctuary from 6 – 6:30 p.m. the first Sunday of each month. The service for this month will be December 4th at 6pm. Regardless of who you are and what you carry, you are welcome in this place. Come to pray aloud or silently. Come forward to be prayed for through naming your concerns or retaining your silence. Or...simply come to sit for a while and unwind with your own thoughts. No pressure, no intrusion...A simple service without music...without liturgy...in a candle-lit sanctuary where we gather to hear a few readings, pray and be prayed for, and sit and just be.
